SBTi strategy update
The Science Based Targets have put forth a new strategy which has three important elements. These are the most important changes from July 15, 2022, and onwards:
· Companies will no longer be allowed to set near-term ‘well-below 2°C’ targets in Scope 1 & 2 – only 1.5°C targets.
· Companies will no longer be allowed to set near-term ‘2°C’ targets in Scope 3 – only ‘well-below 2°C’ or more ambitious targets.
· The target year is decreasing from 5-15 years to 5-10 years from the date of target submission
You can get a full overview of the new strategy in a recorded webinar from August 27 or read more on the SBTi website.
Business Ambition for 1.5°C
In the lead-up to the climate negotiations at COP26, it is important that the private sector shows leadership and commitment to a net-zero future. Therefore, we are once again calling on companies to join our Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign and the ‘Race to Zero’.
We encourage you to ask your peers, suppliers, and partners to commit – and in case you are not yet part of the movement of 700+ companies, please do join!
To be on the official list of committed companies which will be presented at the COP26, we ask that you commit as soon as possible and preferably no later that mid-October.
Resources for SMEs
Lastly, I just want to share some updates and useful resources for all the SMEs in this group (companies with 500 employees or less in the SBTi definition):
· New Target Validation Form: Please check out our new online target validation form. It has become a bit easier to join the SBTi using this form.
· Updated FAQ: Get all the latest facts on joining SBTi as an SME in our new FAQ.
· SME Climate Hub: We have officially partnered with the SME Climate Hub which has a myriad of very useful resources for you to get started on your climate accounting.
· Klimakurser: If you or one of your colleagues need a basic introduction to climate change science and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol in Danish, we have arranged with klimakurser.dk to cut off 1/3 of the price for their three-day climate course for all representatives of Danish Global Compact signatories.
· Klimaklar SMV podcast (Danish): The project Klimaklar SMV has just released a new podcast going over the basics of climate accounting and putting forth best practice examples from small Danish companies. Find it wherever you listen to podcasts.
